Apple announced the new iOS6 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch at WWDC 2012. With over 200 new and updated features most important ones are updated Siri, Facebook Integration, new Passbook app and Turn by turn navigation and updated maps.
“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device,” – Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president of iOS Software said in a June 11 statement.
iOS6 Main Features
With iOS6 Apple brings its own maps app which features “flyover” which can be used
explore cities in 3D view just like Google Earth and it is rumored that Apple will break the ties with Google and stop shipping their Maps app preloaded.
Siri— the personal assistant which was launched as part of iOS 5 has been updated and becomes more useful for things like booking a reservation or finding out a score. With an Eyes Free mode, iPhone users can direct Siri with just their voice. The new Siri, which will also work on the new iPad, includes language support for English, French, German and Japanese, and has added support for Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese.
iOS6 will bring tight integration with Facebook and makes it easier to post status updates, share photos, locations from maps, high score from games. You can even post a status update with Siri. Facebook is also integrated with the contacts and calendar apps so you will never forget any birthdays or any other event. The Like button is now part of iTunes and the App Store. So you can Like songs, albums, shows, movies, and apps. And there’s no need to leave whatever app you’re in to do it.
iOS6 : Availability
iOS 6 will be available for download in the next 3-4 months and supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3, however iOS6 is available for the developers to try and start building new apps which can leverage the new features. iPad 1 owners have been left out as Apple is dropping support for it. Poor me, I think its time to buy a new iPad.
